Bali: Sanur, Ubud and Beyond.

Hey everyone, since my last post we have now arrived and settled into Bali.

I was pleasantly surprised to find Bali to be even cheaper than Sri Lanka. You can be a Balinese millionaire for the low price of £50, however this does also mean you end up with a lot of notes to carry round with you!

Due to the recent earthquakes we had to amend our itinerary to look as per the below:

Sanur -> Ubud -> Canggu -> Nesu Lembongan & Nusa Penida -> Uluwatu -> Bingin Beach -> Sydney

Sanur

This was our first stop after arriving in Bali, we purely used this as a pit stop before heading further onto Ubud. Unfortunately I don’t have much to add to this as we were too exhausted to explore the area…

Ubud

So after a restful evening we headed to Ubud, we wasted no time once we had checked into our hostel and booked a taxi to one of the local temples called Tirta Empul.

Tirta Empul Temple

It’s famous for the water baths where you wash your sins away, I wasn’t really told how it works and after speaking to others I think I may have drank out of one of the faucets that represents death but death comes for us all right!

Warning: Pasty white torso photos below.

After this point we headed back to the hostel to have a quiet evening which quickly devolved into a night out that finished at 4am…

Ulun Danu Temple

So the morning after was a pretty tough one for us both but we did manage to get up at 8:00am and by 8:30am we were on our way to our first stop, Ulun Danu Temple.

You can see the pain in our eyes.

Tegenungan Waterfall

After this temple we headed south for Tegenungan Waterfall. It has been the highlight of my Bali trip so far and the fact you swim in the pool around the waterfall just made it that much more enjoyable.

Goa Gajah Temple

After drying off from the waterfall swim we set off for our next stop which was the Goa Gajah Temple.

We made a tourist mistake of buying a sarong from a woman for 60,000 rupees (c.£3) in the car park as you aren’t allowed to show your knees in most temples in Bali so you must cover them. We didn’t realise however that they give you free sarongs upon entry to the temple, a lesson well learnt!

I found this stop to be a little overrated as there wasn’t much else apart from the below cave entrance to see.

Unrelated to the temple but I managed to snap a cool shot of a caterpillar at the cafe where we had lunch in inside the temple ground.

Coffee Plantation

I enjoy my flat whites and americano’s as much as the next person but I wouldn’t hold myself out as a coffee connoisseur, however I was interested to see the methods behind how it was made.

The tour itself was pretty short and the plantation was a lot smaller than I had imagined, at the end they gave us 8 tasters of coffee and tea separately so we could find our favourites.

Then we were escorted around a shop where we could purchase the tea’s/coffee’s we sampled.

Although the tour and tasters were free the whole trip just felt like a ploy to buy from their shop and made us feel pretty uncomfortable when we didn’t want to buy anything. In the end we gave our tour guide a token tip as a kind gesture for her time.

I didn’t really take any shots here as it was so short but below are some cocoa pods!

Mount Batur

So we opted to do a sunrise trek for Mount Batur, this meant we were up at 2am to be picked up from our hostel and taken to the base of Mount Batur.

The hike up to the top only takes 2 hours with most only the last hour being truly steep.

We were told the view of the sunrise from Mount Batur is beautiful but unfortunately for us it was an extremely cloudy day at the top so we didn’t manage to catch any of the sunrise…

Regardless of that, we still met some fun people, got some good exercise and can cross hiking up an active volcano off my bucket list!

Some will say the below is photoshopped but don’t believe them…

Next Stop: Canggu

So we decided to extend our time in Ubud for 1 more night due to the hostel we are staying at are hosting a BBQ tonight and we have made good friends with the staff and other people here.

After that we will head to Canggu for some surfing and further relaxing/beach parties.

On a side note, If you are ever travelling through Ubud I cannot recommend Puri Garden Hostel, hands down the most fun hostel I have stayed at! (Photo of the social area below)
